Welcome to the National Home Education Network We’re changing the way the world sees homeschooling!
Our Mission Statement
The National Home Education Network exists to encourage and facilitate the vital grassroots work of state and local homeschooling organizations and individuals by providing information, fostering networking and promoting public relations on a national level. Because we believe there is strength in a diverse network of homeschoolers, we support the freedom of all individual families to choose home education and to direct such education.
Homeschooling Freedom and NHEN's Work
As stated in the NHEN Mission Statement, "...we support the freedom of all individual families to choose home education and to direct such education." Because we believe the right to choose home education is
fundamental to the very nature of parenthood, the National Home Education Network (NHEN) calls on government and business officials, professional educators, and all others who take an interest in the
education of children, to respect this fundamental liberty by recognizing parents' rights to home educate free from undesired interference.
NHEN supports the right of parents to take complete charge of their own children's learning by choosing home education. The right of parents to choose to educate their own children is one of the most essential
characteristics of a free society and NHEN encourages all freedom-loving people to be vigilant in protecting and defending this fundamental liberty.
NHEN's Mission Statement clearly describes the kind of work in which NHEN will engage. All NHEN activities are chosen within the context of supporting, but not replacing, work that is most appropriately and
effectively carried out at the state and local levels. NHEN cannot and does not attempt to dictate to homeschoolers what they should say or do and does not take "sides" when disagreements arise among
homeschoolers themselves, but, instead, provides information on all sides. NHEN's public relations work is focused on helping journalists, legislators, researchers, and others understand homeschooling's
diversity, its nonstandardized nature, and its success as a viable family-based educational alternative. NHEN believes that a well-informed public is essential to protecting homeschooling freedoms.
Through this work, NHEN lays a foundation of understanding that will help state and local communities resist unnecessary and unworkable attempts to regulate homeschooling.
NHEN offers:
- accurate and complete homeschooling information that cuts across all political agendas, religious affiliations, and homeschooling styles,
- networking opportunities through email, op-ed webpages, event listings, support contacts, newsletters, and news reports,
- and public relations work in which NHEN helps diverse members of the homeschooling community speak out for themselves to accurately and effectively educate and inform the non-homeschooling public about homeschooling.
